This year marks 100 years since famous author Roald Dahl was born.

.
Dahl wrote more than 20 children’s books, including The Twits, Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Roald Dahl was incredibly creative and came up with more than 500 new words and character names.
Some examples are Oompa-Loopmas and scrumdiddlyumptious from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and snozzcumbers and frobscottle from the BFG.
He called his language Gobblefunk, and loved to play around with words and invent new words or meanings.
This year Oxford University Press even created the Roald Dahl Dictionary, which features almost 8,000 real and imaginary words which he loved to use.
Roald Dahl spent around four hours every day writing stories from his garden shed! He would also only write his stories using a pencil and yellow paper.

Read some Roald Dahl stories in our school library!

Extinct Lion Found!!!

attenborough lion

A miniature marsupial lion, extinct for at least 18 million years, has been named after
Sir David Attenborough, a Broadcaster Naturalist.
Its fossilised remains were found in a remote part of Australia.
Teeth and bone fragments from the kitten-sized predator, named Microleo attenboroughi, were found in limestone deposits at the Riversleigh World Heritage Fossil site in north-western Queensland.
The researchers named the new species after the British broadcasting legend because of his work promoting the famous fossil site, which provides a record of nearly 25 million years of Australia’s natural history.

Paris Bans Plastic!!

Image result for paris eiffel towerImage result for plastic and metaL cutlery

France has announced a new law banning plastic cutlery. The idea is to step up efforts to reduce            pollution. It follows a ban on plastic bags, in place since July.
As part of the country’s plans to be more environmentally friendly, plastic knives, forks, spoons, cups             and plates will no longer be allowed.
The new measures gives producers until 2020 to ensure that all disposable dishes sold in France are                              made of biologically sourced materials and can be composted.
I think this is a great idea for France and that more countries
should be doing it as well.

KFC Recipe Found??

THE ORIGINAL 11 SPICES SECRET RECIPE?

Has the KFC secret recipe been found out?
KFC has always said that Colonel Harland Sanders’ tasty blend of 11 herbs and spices is a closely guarded secret.
The original recipe was developed in the 1940s, when Colonel Sanders began cooking his famous chicken, and is thought to be the key to the fast-food giant’s success.
But this week an old scrapbook belonging to one of the Colonel’s relatives was published online.
Stuck inside an envelope in the scrapbook is a handwritten note with the recipe in it.
Below is the recipe that was published in America. Feel free to make your own KFC at home.

Prep: 30 minutes
Soak: 20-30 minutes
Cook: 15-18 minutes
Makes: 4 servings
2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 tablespoon salt
1/2 tablespoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 tablespoon dried basil leaves
1/3 tablespoon dried oregano leaves
1 tablespoon celery salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon dried mustard
4 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons garlic salt
1 tablespoon ground ginger
3 tablespoons ground white pepper
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
1 chicken, cut up, the breast pieces cut in half for more even frying
Expelled-pressed canola oil
1. Mix the flour in a bowl with all the herbs and spices; set aside.
2. Mix the buttermilk and egg together in a separate bowl until combined. Soak the chicken in the buttermilk mixture at room temperature, 20-30 minutes.
3. Remove chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dip the chicken pieces in the herb-spice-flour mixture to coat all sides, shaking off excess. Allow to sit on a rack over a baking sheet, 20 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, heat about 3 inches of the oil in a large Dutch oven (or similar heavy pot with high sides) over medium-high heat to 350 degrees. (Use a deep-frying thermometer to check the temperature.) When temperature is reached, lower the heat to medium to maintain it at 350. Fry 3 or 4 pieces at a time, being careful not to crowd the pot. Fry until medium golden brown, turning once, 15-18 minutes. Transfer chicken pieces to a baking sheet covered with paper towels. Allow the oil to return to temperature before adding more chicken. Repeat with remaining chicken.

SUSHI BURGER

Introducing the Sushi Burger

Sushi has gone from a posh dinner out to a lunchtime staple – and people are always finding new ways to consume it. Introducing the Sushi Burger.
Restaurants and food fanatics all over the world have been creating their own take on the Sushi Burger, and it can’t be long before it finds a way to one of our chains in New Zealand.
Chefs craft the rice into the dome shape of a burger. It is sometimes left just-cooked, sticky and fresh, and sometimes fried for ease of eating.
Also included are traditional sushi components, like raw fish, ginger, seaweed and wasabi, but with a burger shop twist – so some versions include pulled pork and pickles, while others include a big, juicy burger patty.
However, it looks impossible to eat. It certainly doesn’t seem to have the face-shoving, juice-dripping qualities of a burger carried in a sturdy bun. And it would leave you with sticky fingers and rice all over the floor.

Olympic Medals NOT Made of REAL GOLD!!!

Gold medals are the ultimate prize in any Olympic sport.
All WORLD ATHLETES WOULD DO ALMOST ANYTHING FOR THEM!
However, at the Rio Olympics there is no such thing. Both the first and the second place athletes get silver medals with the only difference being that those that finish first get theirs plated in a tiny amount of gold.
The medals given to champions at these Olympics will weigh around 500g, so to make them entirely from gold would have cost about $23,500 in material, each.
By taking the silver medals and then plating them in a tiny amount of Brazilian gold, the actual value of the metal inside those medals is about $600.
The gold cover is certified to have a certain amount of purity and is considered very high quality.
A total of 2,488 medals have been produced: 812 gold, 812 silver and 864 bronze.
WHAT IS THE DESIGN LIKE?
For the first time, the medals are slightly thicker at their central point compared with their edges. The name of the event for which the medal was won is engraved by laser along the outside edge.
The designs feature laurel leaves – a symbol of victory in ancient Greece, in the form of the wreaths awarded to competition winners – surrounding the Rio 2016 Olympic logo.

Leopard Escapes Zoo in the USA

A leopard escapes from Hogle Zoo in Utah, USA. He escaped in a public area but it was lucky for the people that they all hid in the shop, café and other buildings. The leopard was a 4 year old girl and her name was Zeya. Zeya was found an hour later asleep near her enclosure. The strange thing was that no one knows what happened when she escaped.
In my opinion I say that they're not doing their jobs at the zoo because they did not see what happened or they did not stop the leopard from getting away.

NZ Voted Best Country 3rd time in a Row!!

nz

BE PROUD KIWIS because we were voted 1ST BEST COUNTRY!!!

About 90,000 people voted around the world!
for their favorite destinations giving New Zealand the Best Country Tittle!

The runners up are South Africa and Maldives. But Capetown was voted best town and
Denmark was voted happiest.

Prime Minister, John Key, said that he believes New Zealand’s tourism success is due to our country living up to the hype, providing tourists with an experience “that is better than the brochure.”

Around $600 million has been invested by the Government in New Zealand’s tourism and promotion since 2008.
This is the 3rd year in a row that NZ has won the Best Country title and the head of Telegraph Travel believes it is because New Zealand offers almost everything travellers want.
NZ may be small, but I guess this proves that great things really do come in small packages!!
I think this is interesting to know because its good to know New Zealand won something.

An online auto sales company has been working on creating this vending machine since 2013.   The 5 storey glass machine has now opened in Nashville, Tennessee (USA)
Costumers get given a special coin, and when the costumer inserts                                                   the coin they just watch there brand new car coming down.

I think this is interesting to read because you can get chocolate out of a vending machine but not a CAR!!

14 Year Old Boy Turns Down $44 million!!!

boygenius

Taylor Rosenthal is a budding Bill Gates. The 14-year-old’s start-up company is already so popular, he’s turned down a $44 million offer!!!

Taylor from Alabama is the creator of RecMed, a vending machine that dispenses first aid products.
The company, which he launched in 2014, started as a year eight project when the straight-A student was taking part in a Young Entrepreneurs Academy class.
“We had to come up with a business idea,” he said.
“Every time I’d travel for a baseball tournament in Alabama, I’d notice that kids would get hurt and parents couldn’t find a band-aid. I wanted to solve that.”
The idea evolved into a vending machine.
I think a lot of people may find it odd to say no to $44 million but I think Taylor is doing the right decision to develop his skills with BILL GATES!!!

Archaeologists Discover Endeavour

Cookendeavour

Famous archaeologists from America have discovered the last remains of the ship that Captain James Cook sailed as the first person to chart New Zealand in 1770. Researchers say that they may have come across the ship wreck of the HMS Endeavour off the coast of Rhode Island. The ship was last seen in 1778 when it was being used as a transport vessel during the American Revolution. It also had a new name - Lord Sandwich.

The Endeavour was a bark - a three masted sailing ship. The Rhode Island marine archaeology project RIMAP0 says the Endeavour was one of 13 ships sunk in Newport Harbour in1778. Archaeologist will now carry out further investigations of the vessels structure and it's related artifacts.

Welcome Back Mrs Mulrennnan

(Noelani)  (Mrs Mulrennan)
How did you feel when you walked through the school gates?
When I walked through the school gate at the beginning of the year I felt a bit excited and a bit nervous at the same time, but I also felt like I was coming back to my home where I felt safe, and when I saw the kids who I've taught in the past, I was very happy that I've decided to come back.

Where did you go when you left Papatoetoe East 3 years ago?
I went to a school called Papatoetoe North Primary School which is not far from here and very close to where I live, and I taught there for three years mostly I taught new Year 0/1 just like I've always done at Papatoetoe East.

Can you tell us about any of the other teachers that left with you?
Yes I can because I'm still friends with all of those teachers.
  • Miss Lepou is teaching a Year four class at Mt. Roskill Primary School. She also  has a very cool blog that kids can look at and I can give you the address. She has two little girls now, the eldest is named Tamaya and she is four nearly five and Annie who's two.
  •  Mrs DesForge is teaching a year one class  at New Market Primary School and is enjoying this.
  • Miss Nola is teaching a class out west in West Auckland, I think it's a year two class and she has a little boy.
  •  Miss Mac is working at the ZOO!!! She's actually in a  classroom located in the zoo teaching them about the animals there and she loves working there. She gets to see  some of the children she's taught in the past and the same time meet many new kids.

Why did you leave Papatoetoe North?
After 3 years of teaching at Papatoetoe North, I thought it was time for a change plus I wanted to see what other schools were like. I was thankful to see an opportunity to teach in Auckland and at Papatoetoe East. So, When Mrs Compston and Mr Gilbert asked to come back I said "YES PLEASE!!"

So far, how do you feel about your decision to come back?
Yes I think I've made a really good decision coming back and I LOVE the library. I think it's the best library in Auckland because I love books and I love teaching in a school where there's lots of books. And I like the gardens in the Living Classroom. But do you know what I like best of all? The children because I think that they are all very special.

Poppy is a fraidy cat that only sleeps, eats and sometimes runs about but she doesn't that often. She mostly hangs about in the office.
